Tanner sisters lead Auburn to victory at SEC Tournament

The Auburn women's basketball team outlasted Ole Miss' hot shooting in the first half as the Tigers advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2014 SEC Tournament with a 70-54 win over the Rebels on Thursday at the Arena at the Gwinnett Center.

Senior Tyrese Tanner led the way with her sixth double-double of the season, scoring 16 points and collecting 12 rebounds, while her sister Tra'Cee Tanner poured in a team-high 17 points in the win. Junior Hasina Muhammad added in 11 points and tied a career-high with five blocks in the win.

Auburn (17-13) now advances to the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament to face No. 3 seed Texas A&M on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. CT.

Ole Miss (12-20) jumped out to an 11-point lead midway in the first half behind McFarland's hot shooting. The senior point guard scored 20 of Ole Miss' 37 points in the first half, including five from range.

Auburn kept pace with Ole Miss with hot shooting of their own. Auburn finished the half shooting 45.5 percent from the field as Ty Tanner poured in 10 points in the game's first 20 minutes, also collecting seven boards.

Brandy Montgomery's three-point play put Auburn in front momentarily with 0:49 to go in the first half, but the Rebels countered quickly with another 3-pointer to go up 37-35. It was Auburn's first trey of the half from Khady Dieng that put the Tigers into the lead heading into the locker room up 38-37.

The Tigers began to pull away in the second half by controlling the glass and winning the battle in the paint, outscoring Ole Miss, 28-8. Auburn closed the game on a 16-2 run over the final 6:42 and held the Rebels to just 20 percent shooting from the field. Auburn shot 22-of-27 from the free throw line in the win, finishing at 81.5 percent on the night.
