A 22-year-old Lake Charles woman is in custody after a fatal crash Sunday night in Acadia Parish, state police said.

Troop I spokesman Stephen Hammons said Emily Marcantel has been charged with vehicular homicide, reckless operation and no seat belt.

Hammons said the one-vehicle crash happened around 7:56 p.m. on La. 370 near Roxie Road.

"For reasons still under investigation, Marcantel traveled off the right side of the road in a curve and struck the ditch causing her vehicle to overturn," Hammons said. "Marcantel was found to have a blood alcohol level above the legal limit."

Taylor Bellard was a passenger in Marcantel's vehicle and died a short time after the crash. The 22-year-old Bellard was also not wearing a seat belt, Hammons said.

"The simplest thing (people) can do to minimize the risk of injury in a crash is to be properly restrained," Hammons said. "Proper restraint use allows crash forces to be spread out across the body. While wearing a seat belt will not save you in every crash it will greatly reduce your risk of injury in most crashes."
