Family pet recovering after being used as 'bait'

GEORGIANA, AL (WSFA) -

The attack of a family dog is the center of an animal cruelty investigation in Georgiana.

We found 'Ellie Mae,' a 13-year old Beagle wrapped in a warm blanket at Susanna Gaston's home.

The anger has yet to fade away for Gaston. It appears Ellie Mae was attacked by at least one pitbull.

"At first I didn't believe it," said Gaston. 

Susanna Gaston's dad is still trying to make sense of it all. Al Gaston says last Monday morning started out like any other day. He let Ellie Mae out to do her business but she never returned.

"I didn't see her on Tuesday so I went to the police department and they told me someone had brought in a Beagle that was in a fight with a pitbull," said Gaston.

Although Georgiana police aren't saying much except the case remains under investigation, we've learned there is a witness; a local woman claims to have seen the attack in a neighborhood a mile away from Gaston's home. Depending on the outcome of this investigation WSFA 12 News has learned felony charges may be filed. Right now no one has been arrested. 

Mr. Gaston is convinced someone stole Ellie Mae from the front yard.

"Someone called police and police responded but by the time they got there no one was there. Everybody had scattered," said Gaston.

Ellie Mae suffered severe puncture wounds and deep cuts.

The prognosis for Ellie Mae is good. She is expected to make a full recovery with no long term complications.

And in the short term tender, loving care from a family why such cruelty was necessary.

    Daniel Kight was found guilty of second degree murder today during his murder trial.  Kight pleaded not guilty due to reason of insanity after gruesomely murdering David Scasino. Prosecutors say Scasino was stabbed at least fifty times and his body was mutilated. After Kight visited a state appointed a psychologist, Judge Robert Wyatt had to base the decision on whether Kight knew right from wrong at the time of the offense.  Kight's sentencing is set at 1:30 p.m. on
