LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

It was all about Mardi Gras and canines.

"They enjoy it more than we do so we thought we would come out and bring them all out," said one parade-goer.

Whether on the sidelines or in the spotlight, the hundreds of dogs in attendance all got equal attention.

"Our dogs are the king and queen of Mardi Gras," said another parade-goer.

Lake area pet owners walked beside their costumed pooches for the Krewe of Barkus parade.

Some walked just for fun, and others with a bigger mission.

"Just getting the positive pit bull out in the community," said Kerry Miller.

And while each dog differs in breed, they all have a costume in common.

"I threw it together this morning," said Miller.

Ultimately, this parade is giving man's best friend the chance to celebrate the Mardi Gras tradition.

"They're enjoying it, I can tell you right now, yes they sure are," said one dog owner.
