KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

There's a new perspective on the fatal shooting of a firefighter who assaulted a police officer. The cab driver whose beating started the whole thing spoke for the first time.

It was at the Kansas City Marriott Downtown where surveillance video captured Anthony Bruno punching a cab driver following a disagreement over what it would cost to take a friend home.

Surveillance video shows Ahmed Alomari in the leather jacket and hoodie picking up a fare at Anthony's Restaurant. Bruno is in the vest, helping support an inebriated friend, and Bruno's wife is still in her wedding dress.

Before that night was over, Alomari would end up in the hospital with a blackened eye and bruises up and down his arm from punches he says were meant for his face.

The trouble came at the Marriott, the bride and groom's final destination. Video shows Bruno get out and push the cabbie against his minivan and swing. The cabbie raised his arm to deflect the punches.

The resulting bruises are evident that he took many rounds.

The scuffle was noisy enough to alert Officer Don Hubbard, who headed to the van. Bruno walked off just as the officer walked up. Before long video shows Hubbard take a beating trying to get Bruno into custody.

Hubbard, who needed facial reconstructive surgery, said he fired just as he was about to pass out.

Alomari said when police told him how it ended, he cried.

"When police told me he died," he said, "I cried because I am a father. I felt for his father and mother. I am sad for his mother and father, but I am thankful for police."

A grand jury cleared the officer earlier this month, determining that the shooting was justified.
