GM recall doesn't address problem exposed by Channel 4 I-Team

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Drivers of General Motors vehicles are confused following a massive recall, wondering why the problem they're experiencing isn't being addressed.

On Tuesday, General Motors added four more models to its recall - now affecting more than 1 million vehicles - citing 13 deaths associated with air bags failing to deploy.

Among the models now being recalled is the 2007 Saturn Sky.

Late last year, the Channel 4 I-Team aired an investigation showing Sky drivers across the country complaining that modules triggering passenger side airbags are failing.

Mechanics are diagnosing "bad passenger side presence modules" and are telling drivers if there was a crash, the passenger side air bag wouldn't deploy.

But the GM recall doesn't address those modules.

Instead, the company says a problem with faulty ignition switches can cause jarring, which could shut off the engine and disable front air bags.

Both problems feature air bags failing to deploy, but with different pieces of the car.

Ken Hicks, who works outside of the news department of Channel 4, experienced the bad passenger side presence module with his 2007 Saturn Sky.

"It's very confusing and very frustrating," Hicks said.

A spokesman for GM tells the Channel 4 I-Team there are no reports of air bags failing in crashes with the 2007 Saturn Sky.

"The Saturn Sky was included in the recall expansion because it uses the same ignition switch as the other models recalled," said GM spokesman Alan Adler. "There are no known air bag failures in this recall involving 2007 Saturn Sky."

But Hicks points out he and dozens of other Sky drivers across the country had reported the failing airbag sensors to both GM and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Hicks has already paid more than $800 out of pocket to fix the faulty presence modules, but GM refuses to pay for it because the company says it's out of warranty.

Now, Hicks and the other drivers have to bring in their cars to have the ignition issue addressed as well.

Fall officially began at 3:02 p.m. Friday, but Mother Nature did not get that memo!  It will continue to feel like summer through this weekend into most of next week.  The long-range forecast does show a possible cold front, but that is nearly a week away and subject to change.  Temperatures will be warm and muggy overnight with lows by Saturday morning ranging from the upper 60s north of I-10 to the upper 70s at the coast.
