LSUS holds off Centenary for a 6-5 win on the diamond

The Centenary baseball team dropped a 6-5 affair to cross-town rival LSU-Shreveport on Tuesday evening. The Gents fall to 3-7 on the season while the Blue and Gold improve to 11-5.

Centenary left 12 total runners on the bases including a combined four in their last two trips to plate and committed five errors in the contest, but couldn't find the timely hit to snap a four-game skid.

The Maroon and White out hit its neighbors to the south 9-5 on the night including a multiple hit effort from Michael Schimpf who notched three hits at the dish to pace the squad. Aaron Quintanilla joined Shreveport, La., teammate with in the multi-hit effort going 2-for-5 at the plate. The duo combined to drive in four of the Gents runs while Chris Jones added the remaining RBI.

Centenary sent eight hurlers to bump in the contest with Matt Posey taking the loss – his first of the season – allowing three runs with a walk and strikeout in just two-thirds innings of work. Starter Holden Novak tossed 1.1 frames holding the Pilots off the baes and the scoreboard. Devin Bench followed with 1.1 innings in relief garnerning three strikeouts.

After five innings, the two intra-city squads stood deadlocked at 5-all, but a LSUS three-run, sixth inning broke the tie as the Pilots capitalized on two errors and a pair of wild pitches in the inning. Centenary attempted rallies in the sixth and seventh, but couldn't manage to push runs acroos the board stranding two in the sixth and another in the seventh.

The Gents finally cut back into the deficit in the eighth as they loaded the bases with no outs. Quintanilla and Jones each drove in runs, but the rally ended with two runners on base. Centenary attempted its last push in the ninth with Christian Sebastien and Greg Monnette, Jr. each walking in the inning, but the duo was left standing on the bases.

Brock Blanchard (1-1) grabbed his first win of the season pitching just an inning and allowing two walks. Brandon Russell tossed the final frame striking out two and walking a pair against five batters faced.

Centenary returns to action on Friday, Feb. 28 as the Gents travel to Trinity University for a non-conference, three-game series. First pitch Friday is slated for 7 p.m. with the Saturday doubleheader slotted to begin at 1 p.m.
