GLOBE, AZ (CBS5) -

An attorney, hired by Gila County to serve as a public defender, has been fired for allegedly sending sexual images to a client.

One of attorney Robert Standage's clients showed texts, photos and video messages of a sexual nature on her phone that came from Standage's number, according to Gila County Superior Court documents.

Standage is a private attorney contracted through the county.

On Jan. 21, a judge suspended Standage's cases while the incident was investigated.

Standage admitted to a "text message relationship" with the client, according to the court documents but said they did not have a physical relationship.

He was fired from contracts in Superior and Globe Justice courts as well as appointments in juvenile matters.

"This type of misconduct would, of course, be troubling under any circumstance. However, the fact that the lawyer was appointed to represent the client makes the lawyer's unethical, incompetent conduct intolerable because the client has little choice in the matter," presiding judge Peter J. Cahill said in the court documents.

Standage had been on probation regarding a 2013 incident with another client. No other details were released on the 2013 case.

The State Bar of Arizona has an open investigation into Standage.

The State Bar said if it felt that an interim suspension is necessary then they would take that action but as of Friday, that had not happened.

Standage's attorney, Scott Rhodes said Standage will not comment until the State Bar has completed its investigation.

"Mr. Standage will continue to cooperate with the State Bar as he has cooperated with the Gila County counts," Rhodes said Friday.
