Some workers forced to give up personal days on snow days

Some workers in Connecticut said they don't get paid days off when storms like Winter Storm Easton come. They said they have to give up a personal day.

Workers at Pegasus Manufacturing in Middletown said their company gave them the option to come in during the storm Thursday.

"Probably in 25 years, we have closed less than 10 times maybe six," said Todd DiPentima of Pegasus Manufacturing. "We closed last year in a major snow storm."

However, workers said they cannot simply stay home and get paid. They said they can either use a personal day or work more hours to make it up.

While the company would still have to pay $20,000 a day to cover salaries of its 85 employees, it said it would lose production and have nothing for that money.

The state Department of Labor said it's up to the companies when it comes to how they pay their workers. The department said it would only get involved if people actually worked and did not get paid.

"Certain employees must report, they know who they are," said Gov. Dannel Malloy on Wednesday. "Those otherwise know they don't report; under these circumstances will stay home."

As for state workers, when Malloy tells them to stay home, they do get paid. Corrections officers, however, have to come to work regardless of the weather. Some are given compensation days and even overtime.

Malloy ordered nonessential first- and second-shift state employees not to report on Thursday.

DiPentima said his employees would love to have the day off and still get paid.

"In a perfect world they could," he said. "But we are hindered by the economy and we have a solid bottom line."
