Residents looking for solutions to fight crime

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

Instead of complaining about ongoing criminal activity, one North Lake Charles community is trying to find solutions. About a dozen residents living in Council District A have formed a group to identify the problems and ways to fix them.

"If we don't take care of each other... Problems just get worse," said Linda Papion, Lake Charles District A resident.

Papion says among their growing list of concerns: ongoing drug activity and prostitution. According to residents police are called and step up patrols, but say the criminals and problems always return.

They say part of the problem is abandoned homes and buildings that attract this type of activity. They also say all too often the evidence is gone by the time authorities arrive.

"Everybody has cell phones - when you see this kind of incident going on... If you gotta camera on your cell phone - take a picture. A picture doesn't lie," said Papion.

They say they're still getting organized and plan to meet with Lake Charles Police and the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office.

"You know the problems have been with us an awful long time. We don't want to point fingers. We want to help solve them. We want to get rid of them and we want them to come and educate us on what it is we as citizens can do. We want to be part of the team," said Papion.

Anyone in District A with concerns can contact Councilwoman Mary Morris. The group meets the second and fourth Wednesday of every month at 10:30 a.m. at the MLK Community Center.

    Multiple fire departments responded to a house fire in DeQuincy early Saturday afternoon.

    DeQuincy Fire Chief Johnny Copeland said the fire department received a call about smoke coming from the house on 1237 Dougharty Road sometime around noon.

    A cargo trailer caught fire late Saturday morning on I-10 westbound near the Westlake exit. 

    Westlake Police got a call at 10:22 a.m. of the cargo trailer smoking on the interstate, said Westlake Police Chief Chris Wilrye.
