SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

Police say two maintenance workers stepped in when a woman was being assaulted by her intoxicated husband. When her husband began attacking the workers, one of the men pulled a knife on him in self-defense.

The Smith County Sheriff's Office says deputies were dispatched to a disturbance at a residence on West Lakeshore Drive on Monday around 7 p.m. Deputies determined that 29-year-old Jermaine Lamar Benson had arrived at the residence intoxicated. When Benson arrived at the home, a verbal altercation began between him and his wife.

Two maintenance men, at the home working on the heating system, attempted to intervene in the altercation in order to protect the woman. That's when authorities say Benson attacked the men. One of the men stabbed Benson in self defense.

Benson was taken to a local hospital to undergo surgery. His condition is unknown at this time.

The investigation is ongoing and no additional information has been released at this time.

Benson has previously been arrested in Smith County three times for assault of family member/household member, once for driving while intoxicated and once for aggravated sexual assault.

400 people were rescued from human trafficking last year in Louisiana alone... 30 people have been rescued, so far, this year. With tomorrow being "Shine a Light on Slavery Day", you can raise awareness by doing one simple task, drawing a red 'X' on the back of your hand. That red 'X' stands for the millions who cannot stand up for themselves. "We find people all the time who will do it and then their friends, their neighbors, or even their family...
