RV parks could face tougher standards in Calcasieu Parish

CALCASIEU PARISH, LA (KPLC) -

Calcasieu Parish Police Jurors listened to a new proposal brought on by the increase of industrial projects headed to the lake area.

"We noticed in 2013 that there was a pretty big rise of recreational vehicle parks that came to the police jury for rezoning and we just felt like it was time for us to look at that and see if we needed to have tougher standards," said Assistant Director of Advanced Planning and Grants, Jennifer Wallace.

Some of the new proposed standards range from the size of the lots for RV spaces, to the number of RV's that can be within a spot, and different standards for rural and suburban areas.

Currently, recreational vehicles and manufactured home parks fall under the same zoning classification. But the potential new standards could change that.

"Now it's going to require a separate zoning classification so if you want to have an RV park, we'll zone it to an RV park versus a mobile home park," said Director of Planning and Development, Wes Crain.

But for those already established, parish officials said it's no change.

"If you already have your park zoned RMHP and that was done years ago and it has RV's and manufactured homes then you will be allowed to continue" said Crain.

And parish officials said ultimately the proposed new standards will give the people more comfort knowing what is around them, and knowing it will stay that way.

"If they're located next to a manufactured home park then they will know they are next to a manufactured home park and if they're next to an RV park they will know they're next to an RV park," said Wallace.

Police Jurors are set to vote on the standards January 23rd.

Parish officials said they welcome any comments, suggestions, and concerns about the standards before the actual vote.

For the rest of today, it will be very nice to get outside. There will be plenty of sunshine and very warm temperatures. Highs will be in the lower to mid 80s! This will be one of the warmest days we’ve had so far this year! Later by this evening, temperatures will still be warm, but a few clouds will be increasing. Especially after sunset. This is ahead of our next cold front that will come through tonight. Tonight, there is a good chance we see some rain.
