New Orleans again looking at noise law

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A recurring subject of tension between New Orleans nightspots and neighboring residents is about to be revisited by the New Orleans City Council. Proposed changes to the city's noise ordinance were introduced last month.

Now, a committee hearing has been set for next week in advance of an expected later vote by the full council. The measure includes changes in the methods of measuring noise levels.

It also reduces accepted decibel levels in the French Quarter. Residents and businesses in the Quarter and other neighborhoods have long been at odds over the volume of music at some venues.

The ordinance was listed on the council agenda for Thursday but council staffers said no vote will take place. The committee hearing is set for Jan. 17.
