Cove Lane Interchange Project making progress

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

Just as work continues on the new Golden Nugget Casino, construction is underway on the infrastructure to support the influx of traffic in the area.

The Cove Lane Interchange Project is starting to take shape as well as improvements to nearby roadways. The project is expected alleviate traffic in the area. Currently L'auberge Casino & Resort reports more than two million visitors a year. That number is projected to double once the new casino is complete.

With a deadline of October or November of this year, it's coming along fast.

"Depending on weather and some of the other factors -- it's almost like lightning speed for construction," said Mayor Randy Roach, Lake Charles.

Work is underway on both sides of Interstate-210. DOTD is building service roads that will help divert traffic while a new interstate bridge is constructed over Cove Lane.

"Basically the whole idea is they don't want to ever close that off to traffic to try to make it convenient as possible," said Stuart Weatherford, Lake Charles City Council Vice President.

Crews are in the process of stiffening the ground for the next phase. Once it's all complete it will look a lot like the Nelson Road Interchange - an area that is also expected to benefit from this project.

"It will be a full service interchange. So a lot of traffic on Nelson in the morning will be accessing I-210 there, instead of going east to Nelson," said Weatherford.

"This will be a great way to relieve some of that pressure and especially with the combination of your work traffic, your school traffic. Nelson Road and Prien Lake Elementary - traffic is already backed up. It backs up several blocks all of this was taken into consideration," said Mayor Roach.

DOTD would like to remind motorists that the speed limit through the construction zone is 45 miles per hour and to be on the lookout for crews and equipment.
