SULPHUR, LA (KPLC) -

At about 4:15 a.m. on Tuesday, deputies with the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office responded to a single-vehicle accident in between Vinton and Sulphur.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Edgerly DeQuincy Road and Marcantel Settlement Road.

According to investigators, preliminary investigation revealed that a truck, driven by 19-year-old Davin L. Ackel, of Vinton, was traveling northbound on Edgerly DeQuincy Road and appeared to have traveled off the road.

The truck then entered a ditch and struck several trees before coming to a stop. A passenger in the vehicle, a 16-year-old girl, was ejected from the truck.

Ackel was pronounced dead at the scene, and the passenger was transported to a local hospital in serious condition.

High speed is believed to be a contributing factor in this crash, and it is not known if alcohol was a factor. A routine toxicology report will be conducted as mandated by state law.
