EUNICE, LA (KPLC) -

A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle on Hwy 190 West on January 1. Officers with the Eunice Police Department responded to the incident.

Investigators say that Wilbert Ned, 31, of Eunice, was driving a 2003 Ford Crown Victoria and traveling east when a pedestrian attempted to cross Hwy 190 near the Holiday Inn, and the pedestrian was struck by Ned's car.

The pedestrian, later identified as 53-year-old Herbert Honeycutt, of Eunice, was taken to Acadian Medical Center for treatment and was pronounced dead shortly after.

"Ned failed a field sobriety test and was taken into custody for suspected DWI," said Deputy Chief Varden Guillory Sr. in a news release. "Ned then refused to provide a proper breath sample while at Eunice PD. The proper paperwork was completed, and Ned was then transported to AMC, where blood was drawn... The blood will be sent to the crime lab for analysis."

Ned was booked for DWI and later bonded out on a $1550 bond.

The crash is remains under investigation. Additional charges are pending against Ned.
