Comptroller investigating Wilson County elementary school

Posted: Updated:

A principal and bookkeeper are out at a Wilson County elementary school, and it may have something to with what the district is calling "financial irregularities."

Shannon Williams, the former bookkeeper at Elzie D. Patton Elementary in Mt. Juliet, was fired in November after Principal Lori Hassell contacted the district about some concerns.

After an investigation, Williams was let go.

Weeks later, the district uncovered several inconsistencies with the books and turned it over to the comptroller's office.

Then, just before the Christmas break, Hassell resigned.

School leaders say they can't comment further until the comptroller's office completes its investigation, but they want to assure parents this will not impact students in any way.

"It's not affecting the kids or our teachers. We met with our teachers and let them know very quickly that we would make sure that this did not affect them at all," said Mickey Hall, deputy director of finance and business operations for Wilson County Schools.

An interim principal is in place while the district looks for Hassell's replacement.

In the meantime, the district has taken over the school's finances.

The comptroller's investigation could take several weeks.
