Arkansas nurse dies as the result of severe storms

(WMC-TV) - An Arkansas woman has died as a result of the severe storms that moved through St. Francis County Saturday evening.

According to Charles Lee with the Hughes Fire Department, Charlene Lewis lived with her husband and their three kids in a mobile home near Hughes, Ark. She passed away around 5:30 a.m. at The MED.

First responders say Charlene and her granddaughter were in the backseat of a car, trying to escape the high winds outside.

"Words can't really tell how I feel," said Charlene's brother-in-law, Freddie Lee Smith, Jr. "My family is hurting, so I'm hurting, too."

In addition to the Lewis' home, the other two mobile homes that once sat on the same land are also gone.

Jessie James Doss is a good friend of the Lewis family. He showed up Sunday to see the damage firsthand.

"Unreal man," he said. "Amazing what a tornado can do."

Family members say as Ronnie Lewis rushed out of the mobile home to the car with his wife and family, winds picked him up and dropped him down in a field a quarter mile from his house. He remains in the hospital with a broken back and ankle. His daughter has minor injuries and his granddaughter is at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital with a broken arm.

Charlene Lewis was a nurse at Crittenden Regional Hospital.

James Sanders, 43, of Coahoma County, Miss., was also killed when high winds blew over his mobile home, pinning him against a tree.

A third death was reported in Jasper, County, Miss., which is north of Hattiesburg.

    The Lake Charles Fire Department responded to a house fire on Cherry Street.  District Chief Charles Lee said LCFD received a call about the fire at 4:38 p.m. Lee says the house was vacant when they arrived.  The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
