SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

A Caddo Sheriff's deputy who was injured when his patrol car was hit on Sunday morning while helping a stranded motorist has been released from the hospital.

It happened on I-220 between Lakeshore and Jefferson-Paige Road.

Deputy Mark McLaughlin was responding to a motorist assist call just after 11:00 a.m. when the incident occurred, sheriff's spokeswoman Cindy Chadwick said.

The motorist was on the eastbound inside shoulder.  A Motorist Assist Patrol, or MAP vehicle, was first on the scene.  McLaughlin pulled his patrol car behind the MAP vehicle and was inside his patrol car with the emergency lights on when he was hit from behind by a sport utility vehicle, Chadwick said.

The driver of the Chevy Yukon, Jody Hollis, 39, of Bossier City, said she had reached down for her purse when she hit the patrol car from behind.

McLaughlin was taken to University Health where he was treated and released on Monday.

The accident is still under investigation.
