BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Victims of the state's eugenics program were recently notified that they will have to go through the verification process once again before they receive any compensation.

Elnora Mills of Brunswick County was already confirmed as one of the hundreds of people who were sterilized by order of the state.

Mills, who is suffering from bone cancer, doesn't think she will live long enough to get her due.

"If they are going to give any of us any money, they ought to go ahead and do it before the people die," she said. "They keep putting it off, putting it off."

State officials mailed the verification paperwork to 800 people who claim to be victims of the state's forced sterilization program that ended in the 1970s.

Each verified victim will split an equal share of the $10 million fund that Gov. Pat McCrory signed into law this year.

It's estimated that 7,6000 people were ordered sterilized between 1929 and 1974 by the North Carolina Eugenics Board, according to a press release from the N.C. Department of Administration.

The State Center for Health Statistics estimated that 1,350 to 1,800 may still be living.

The state will accept claim forms until June 30, 2014.

    Sunday, March 26 2017 5:12 PM EDT2017-03-26 21:12:21 GMT
Mostly cloudy skies MondayMostly cloudy skies Monday

Overnight we will have partly cloudy skies. There is a chance for fog to develop again overnight, but only if the wind calms down enough. Temperatures will be mild with lows in the middle 60s. Monday, we will have mostly cloudy skies. Throughout the day, we could also see a couple areas with drizzle. No significant rain is expected. So, if you see any light showers, it will pass by quickly. Temperatures will still be warm with highs in the lower 80s. Tuesday should be a great day!
