911 call, radio chatter in Kenny Miles case released

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Audio released by the city of Columbia tells the story of what happened in the minutes after former Gamecocks running back Kenny Miles shot himself in the arm in Irmo.

One of those audio clips is the 911 call placed by an employee of a construction company at 121 Centrum Drive. Miles' car was parked outside the business when the call was placed.

911 Operator: Who shot him?
Caller: We have no idea.

911 Operator: Okay, he came up and he was already shot?
Caller: He is, he is! His name is Kenny Miles.

The caller then tells the operator that Miles had been shot in the arm and he was breathing. The 911 operator then asks the caller if he knew where the gun was located.

Caller: I have no idea. (Question to someone off the phone: Where's the gun? Who shot him?) I have no idea. He just came up.

The call only lasts 1 minute and 29 seconds.

Initially, the 23-year-old Miles told Richland County investigators he was robbed and then shot.

Law enforcement from the city and county set up perimeters around a wooded area, hoping to catch the suspect Miles described as a white man with gray hair, khakis, and a blue button-down dress shirt. Radio traffic reveals the extensive search involving K9's and the questioning of others who matched the description Miles gave to investigators.

It wasn't until a week later that Miles confessed to shooting himself in the arm.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said he plans to charge Miles with filing a false report. Miles eventually apologized for the incident in a statement from his attorney, Neal Lourie.

"Last week I made a big mistake by not being up front about how the shooting occurred. I was not involved in any criminal activity. However, I was scared and worried how my actions would be perceived. I only made matters worse by not telling the truth. I make no excuses for my behavior," said Miles.

Miles was eventually released from a local hospital, but he is currently recovering from his wounds with the help of an out-of-state doctor.
