BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Former LSU Athletic Director Joe Dean was laid to rest on Wednesday before a packed house at The First United Methodist Church in downtown Baton Rouge.

Joe Dean, Jr. eulogized his father during the hour long service. "My father genuinely was interested in everybody he would meet," said Dean.

A who's who of Baton Rouge and national elected officials and former and current athletes attended the funeral.

"It's a sad day for the sports world," said Lt. Governor Jay Dardenne. "You've got luminaries from all over the country that are here. Joe dean was one of a kind." Dardenne lamented on Dean's reputation as a hawk when watching LSU athletic financials."That was kind of the rap on him. He was a very conservative manager of LSU athletics at a time that he needed to be. He was a success at everything he did," said Dardenne.

Former LSU basketball star Collis Temple was a pallbearer. "There was never a week that went by that we didn't talk or go to lunch or go to breakfast, says Temple. "I spent a lot of time with him. He was a fine guy a great example."

Mayor Kip Holden was particularly impressed by Dean's tenure as Athletic Director given LSU'S reputation in the sports department. "It says that he was able to get along with a lot of people because that's a volatile seat to have and when your able to cultivate all of the different ego's that you see there but at the same time let them know that you're going to do your best to make the situation better when they bring complaints," says Holden.

Current LSU Basketball coach Johnny Jones knew Dean when he was an assistant here under then coach Dale Brown. "I just think that the impact that he made on so many people I thought he touched a lot of lives and impacted them and in a lot of way and not just in the sports industry he was about people and I'm glad that I had the opportunity to spend the time that I did with him here as an assistant," said Jones.

Joe Dean was 83.
