NEW ORLEANS (WAFB) -

San Francisco 49ers linebacker Ahmad Brooks has been fined $15,750 by the NFL for Sunday's illegal hit on Saints quarterback Drew Brees.

ESPN's Adam Schefter was first to report the NFL ruling Wednesday morning.

The play happened late in the fourth quarter with the Saints down 20-17.

Brees fumbled on the hit and it was recovered by the 49ers defense, but Brooks was flagged for a personal foul.

The Saints drive continued and Garrett Hartley kicked a field goal tying the contest at 20-20.

After holding the 49ers to a three and out, Hartley hit a game winning field goal as time expired and the Saints won 23-20.

On Tuesday, NFL vice president of officiating Dean Blandino said the officials in Sunday's game got the call right.

"You can't make forcible contact to the head or the neck area, even if the contact starts below the neck and rises up," Blandino said in an appearance on NFL Network. "If there's force to that contact, it's a foul. Watch the initial contact, maybe around the shoulder, but it rides up into the neck area and brings the quarterback down with force. That's why the flag was thrown for unnecessary roughness."

The good news for Brooks? Former NFL linebackers Tedy Bruschi and Ray Lewis have promised to help pay the NFL fine.
