By McNeese Assistant SID Pam Lafosse

HOUSTON, Texas—  The McNeese women's basketball team failed to pick up their first road win of the season, falling 71-55 to Texas Southern Tuesday night.

"Texas Southern has a very good team.  We knew this was going to be a tough environment," said head coach Brooks Donald Williams.

The Cowgirls had a poor shooting night against a talented Texas Southern team.  McNeese shot 31.0 percent from the field while Texas Southern shot 47.4 percent from the field.  McNeese shot 72.7 from the free throw line and 18.8 from behind the arc but TSU shot 40.0 percent from the arc.

The Cowgirls got as close as three points (35-32) early in the second half before TSU went on a 8-0 run with back-to-back three-pointers from Brianna Sydney followed by two free throws by Morgan Simmons.  The Cowgirls cut the lead to single digits for the last time in the game on two free throws by Alaina Verdin with 8:09 left.  Seven straight points by TSU gave the Lady Tigers a 54-38 lead and then held its largest lead of 20 points (71-51) with 1:16 left in the game.

McNeese placed three players in double figures with Allison Baggett leading the Cowgirls with 18 points.  Cecilia Okoye scored 15 and Alaina Verdin chipped in 11.  NeTanya Jones led McNeese with 10 rebounds.

"Our game plan was to attack the paint and we didn't execute that.  We didn't attack like we can, we played into their game plan."

Texas Southern's Jazzmin Jenkins led all players with a game high 35 points.  Jenkins was 14 of 22 from the field and 5 of 6 from the free throw line in 27 minutes on the floor.  Also scoring in double figures for TSU was Brianna Sidney with 15 and Morgan Simmons ended the game with a double-double (10 pts., 10 reb.).

In the first half, both team put together their own scoring runs.  Texas Southern took the early lead with a 6-0 run after leading 7-4 early in the game.  TSU's Jazzmin Parker scored three straight points to give TSU a 11-4 lead.  After a Cowgirl basket, Jazzmin hit another jumper for a 13-6 Lady Tiger lead.  The Cowgirls went on a 5-0 run of their own on a layup by Jayln Johnson and a three-pointer by Allison Baggett to cut the lead to 13-11 with 10:05 left in the half.  After the teams traded baskets, TSU went on a 12-2 run to take a 14-8 lead.  McNeese closed out the final 5:54 left in the first half on a 8-2 run to trail 29-24 at the half.

The Cowgirls struggled from the field, making 32.3 percent of their shots from the field while Texas Southern shot 43.3 percent from the field.

"We will go back to work on what we need to do to get better as a team."
