New supervisor Greer finds $1M for Raymond jail repairs

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Newly-elected Hinds County District 4 Supervisor Tony Greer didn't waste time during his first meeting Monday morning, gaining enough support from fellow Supervisors to get $1 million allocated toward court-ordered improvements at the Raymond Detention Center.

You've seen the images and heard the stories about severe disrepair and crowded conditions. Recently, Sheriff Tyrone Lewis told the Board that he has a plan in place for a better facility. But no one has given him the money.

"The sheriff needs to be involved in every conversation that we have involving the detention center and improvements that can be made there," Greer told us.

Here's where Supervisor Greer found the cash. A few weeks ago, $3.1 million in bond money that was allocated for the slow-moving Byram Clinton Corridor project was taken out for other projects, against the wishes of a minority of Supervisors. But one of the Supervisors in favor of that move, Al Hunter, is now gone. And another, Kenneth Stokes, was not present to vote at Monday's meeting.

Greer successfully re-directed that money partly back to the Corridor project, and partly to the jail.

It's unknown exactly what improvements that $1 million will fund.

"The priorities need to be determined by the monitoring team and by the sheriff. We need to support those efforts as a board," Greer says.
