Common core walk-out set for today - KPLC 7 News, Lake Charles, Louisiana

Common core walk-out set for today

Good Monday morning to you!  Britney Glaser here with a look at some of the stories you'll see on today's Sunrise:

*An effort to raise awareness on the controversial common core education standards takes place today in Southwest Louisiana and all around the state.  Participating parents will keep their kids home from school and will meet at locations to educate themselves on the pros and cons of common core. Find out where you can participate today.

*We are waiting on more details about what prompted a heavy police presence at a Lake Charles convenience store last night.  We'll tell you what we know about the incident at the More for Less store on Broad Street.  A nearby resident tells us he heard at least one gun shot and saw a man on the ground.

*At least five people are dead after strong winds and tornadoes hit the Midwest Sunday.  This morning, we'll take a look at the devastation.

*Weather changes are on the way for the week.  Meteorologist Ben Terry tells us when we can expect our next cool down.

All of this, plus we'll be in the Sunrise Pet Shop on today's Sunrise from 4:30-7:00 A.M.

Make it a Sunrise day!

FIRST ALERT FORECAST: Warmer temperatures this weekend with a few likely showers

    Thursday, January 18 2018 12:12 PM EST2018-01-18 17:12:32 GMT
Cloudy, yet low rain chance on FridayCloudy, yet low rain chance on Friday

For the rest of today, the sun will continue to shine! Temperatures will warm up a little quicker today, and should reach the 40s. There is little to no chance for any rain, so we will continue to have road conditions improve with no more added water to the surface. There should not be any more major road hazards after today. Tonight, temperatures will not be quite as cold. We will still be at or below the freezing mark, though. North of I-10 will still see the 20s.
