(CNN) – There are new sobering statistics out on children and guns.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, there are approximately 7,500 child hospitalizations and 500 in-hospital deaths each year due to gun injuries.
The AAP said that's from a study that also showed those numbers appear to be increasing over the last decade.
While many gun control efforts focus on limiting military style semi-automatic assault rifles, handguns account for the majority of childhood injuries.
The study also found a link between the percentage of child gunshot injuries occurring in homes of households containing firearms.
Researchers presented the data at the annual American Academy of Pediatrics conference in Orlando on Sunday.
