Cowgirls Volleyball defeat Nicholls State

LAKE CHARLES—  McNeese States volleyball team picked up a Southland Conference straight set win over Nicholls (25-23, 25-16, 25-17) Saturday to improve to 14-12 overall and 6-6 in conference play.  The loss drops Nicholls to 5-18 on the year and 2-11 in conference play.

     Malina Sanchez led the Cowgirls with 14 kills and Sophie Tenbusch recorded 11.  Kimberlyn Patterson recorded a match high 18 digs while Sanchez ended the match with 13 and Bentley with 12.  Carly DeMarque led the Cowgirls with two blocks and Bentley had a match high 35 assists.

     McNeese jumped out to a 2-0 overall match lead with a 25-23 first set win and a 25-16 second set win.  The Cowgirls trailed in the beginning of the first set but came back to tie the set at 10 all on a kill by Sanchez.  The Cowgirls went on to score the next four points to extend their lead to 14-10.  Nicholls came back to tie the set and took a brief lead.  With the Cowgirls leading 23-22, a service ace by Kimberlyn Patterson gave McNeese a 24-22 lead and a kill by Carly DeMarque gave the Cowgirls the 25-23 first set win.

     The Cowgirls cruised to a 25-16 second set win then went on to win the match with a third set 25-17 score. 

     In the third set, the Cowgirls took an early 9-4 lead then and one they never would give up.  A kill by Tenbusch gave the Cowgirls a 20-14 lead.  McNeese scored the final three points of the match on three kills by Rachel Cagnina. 

     The Cowgirls will hit the road for their next four matches beginning with matches at Houston Baptist and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi next weekend.

     The Cowgirls return home  Nov. 12 to host Houston Baptist in its home finale.
