Construction on railroad blocks part of Nacogdoches' West Main Street

NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) -

To allow for Union Pacific employees to perform maintenance on the railroad tracks a few blocks west of Nacogdoches' downtown area, the Texas Department of Transportation has closed the portion of West Main Street (State Highway 21) near the railroad crossing.

Kathi White, a spokeswoman for TxDOT, said that the maintenance work would have been done sooner, but it was re-scheduled because of the weather. The construction is currently under way, and it should be completed by Wednesday, White said.

A press release from TxDOT said the railroad crossing will be closed during the day, and it will remained closed until the maintenance work is completed Wednesday evening. Motorists will need to detour around the construction until further notice.

"Motorists will have to use alternate routes while work is being conducted," the press release stated. "SH 21 westbound traffic will be routed to Pearl Street, while eastbound motorists will travel south on Bremond Street

The press release urged drivers to exercise caution while driving through work zones. Motorists also need to be aware that traffic fines double when workers are present.
