Sam Houston State for homecoming, at first glance, you'd think you read that wrong, but you didn't. Cowboys were faced with a big challenge Saturday night.

"We knew coming into this game, Sam Houston was going to be a tough opponent. And we had a good two weeks to prepare for them. So, we just came in here, knew that honestly we were the better team, and we just had to prove it," Dylan Long said.

And it wasn't until after the first 15 minutes of play that McNeese really got it together.

"You know at the beginning we had everything that we wanted, but we just weren't making plays. And the last three quarters we made a few plays, and that was the difference," said Cody Stroud.

Cowboy defense was able to hold the Bearkats out of the end zone until the 4th quarter.
"We did our job, our assignments. Do your job, and everything else will just fall into place," said Gabe Hamner.

And after the 31-23 victory, the Pokes can consider the job done.

"Really proud of our kids, I thought it was a total team effort. Started with our defense early, but really it's a total team effort when you look at it," said Coach Matt Viator.

Next week the Pokes are on the road against Nicholls State, and what do the players want?

"Get another win, we're trying to get the ring," said Hamner.
