INDEPENDENCE, La. (AP) - The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office says a U.S. Customs helicopter crew and a sheriff's deputy rescued a 13-year-old with special needs from a marshy lake in Independence.
Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Dawn Panepinto says the girl had been missing about an hour from the Girl Scouts' Camp Whispering Pines when the sheriff's office was called Saturday afternoon.
She says foot patrols, mounted deputies and friends and family searched by land, and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement helicopter by air. She says the helicopter crew spotted the girl. The pilot hovered several feet above the water while the copilot and deputy jumped in and swam to her.
Panepinto says the girl was in fair condition with minor injuries, and was taken to a nearby medical center for assessment.
