Construction of new West Cal Arena 'progressing smoothly'

Posted: Updated:

Construction crews are cutting the steel and laying the bricks as they ready the new West Cal Arena in Sulphur.

"With the construction, we have just under eight or nine months left in construction," said West Cal Arena Executive Director Adrian Moreno. "So, we are scheduled to open up sometime in the early part of summer of next year."

Crews broke ground in June 2012 on the $10 million facility that will boast nearly 60,000-square-feet of activity space.

"This facility will have a main ballroom - roughly 14-15,000-square-feet; we also have some meeting rooms," said Moreno. "With the flexibility we have with this facility, we can host a variety of different events ranging from a meeting with 20-30 people up to 700-800 people or even 1,100-1,200 hundred people for a theatre-styled event."

When it's finished, the West Cal Arena will make the second indoor big events center in Calcasieu Parish, along with the Lake Charles Civic Center. Moreno doesn't see them as competition.

"We have a lot of different options that we can provide that some of the other options in Southwest Louisiana can't provide," said Moreno. "We're really looking forward to not being in competition with any existing facilities but really complementing each other."

The facility is scheduled to open in early June 2014, but already they've opened their books for events starting July 1, 2014.

"Currently, we have a few weddings, a few consumer shows and a few trade shows," Moreno said. "We've even opened up the books for Mardi Gras season 2015, so if there's any crews out there that would like to host their event out here we'd love to visit with them."

Moreno said just because the new facility is coming doesn't mean the old facility will go away. He says that facility will still be fully operational and used for events that cater to outdoor venues.
