Tropical Update: Tropical Depression Karen, slowly breaking apart

 

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Your First Alert Weather Team is tracking Tropical Storm Karen in the Gulf of Mexico.

THE LATEST ON KAREN: As of Sunday, the center of tropical Depression Karen is about 90 miles south-southwest of Morgan City, LA. Maximum winds are in the 35mph range.  Atmospheric wind shear was continuing to keep Karen's strongest thunderstorms away from its center - keeping the system weak. 

THE FORECAST FOR KAREN: Karen will likely bring unsettled weather conditions to the north-central and northeastern Gulf Coast (essentially from southeastern Louisiana to northern Florida) through Sunday. After that, it or its remnants will likely be absorbed into a cold front that will be marching across the Southeast. 

HOW MIGHT THIS SYSTEM IMPACT SOUTHEASTERN NC? The cold front plus Karen remnants combination should be enough to spike rain chances to the 50 - 90% range Monday into Monday night and Tuesday. Total rain amounts will depend on the exact evolution of the system. A small risk of severe thunderstorms may develop in this time as well.

    An interesting discovery was made by the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office Dive Team Thursday morning.  

    The dive team suited up and dove into the Calcasieu River to find a Chevrolet Trailblazer they discovered while doing a routine sonar sweep.
