ELLENBORO, NC (FOX Carolina) -

The Helping Hands, Hearts and Hooves Horse Rescue in western North Carolina said they've got a sight they want people to see that will teach a serious life lesson.

They say opposites attract, and at the rescue there couldn't be two horses much different than Luna and Sugarbear.

Out of the 18 horses at the rescue, Luna has perhaps the biggest obstacle. She's 100 percent blind, a disability that is permanent.

"After several vet trips, trips to the university, we were told she's not fixable," said Mary Hunt, a organizer of the rescue team.

At first, her adopted owners were worried, but it was around feeding time weeks after she arrived that they noticed something very special.

Luna, a blind horse, didn't have trouble finding her food anymore because she wasn't alone.

"Once the gates open, Sugar will turn her head and look, make sure Luna's back there, walk slow and open the gate for her, walk inside and get her food," said Hunt.

"Sugarbear tends to stay right with Luna. She's more agitated when Luna wasn't there and wants to lead her always," said Hunt.

Leaders of the rescue said the unlikely pair has taught them an important lesson.

"Horses are smarter than us. They embrace disabilities," said Hunt. "It doesn't matter who the other guy is. If they need help, they'll help them."
