Four Middle Tennessee schools named to Blue Ribbon list

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Several Middle Tennessee schools, including one in Metro Nashville Public Schools, are being honored for their outstanding academic performance.

For the third time in the last five years, MNPS has a school on the list of National Blue Ribbon Schools.

This year, it's Meigs Middle Magnet School, which joins Holy Rosary Academy in Nashville, McFadden School of Excellence in Murfreesboro and Thomas Magnet School in Shelbyville, on the prestigious list.

They are among just 286 schools in the country to be honored this year by the Department of Education.

The Blue Ribbon list honors public and private schools who are in the top 10 percent on state tests, regardless of background, or schools with at least 40 percent of students from disadvantaged backgrounds that show dramatic improvement on state or national tests.

Portions of Iowa have been left swamped by recent heavy rains, especially from Harvey. Wednesday night, residents voiced their opinions on how the town should find a solution to its drainage quagmire. "The biggest thing is just maintaining the ditches," said Iowa resident Warren Hanks. "They're doing it now, but that's after the fact." One-by-one, Iowa residents approached town leaders and emotionally asked for solutions. Many said the town hasn't been clean...
