PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A Phoenix couple has been indicted again in the December 2012 death of a 2-year-old girl they had been watching at their in-house daycare business.

A Maricopa County grand jury handed up the indictment charging Alison Clement and Ryan Reed with second-degree murder and child abuse in connection the death of Savannah Cross. Reed is also charged with two counts of sexual conduct with a minor.

Reed and Clement were originally indicted in December 2012 for murder and child abuse. Those charges were dismissed without prejudice in September 2013. The case ran up against a legal deadline because there weren't enough resources in the Maricopa County Medical Examiner's Office.

On December 5, 2013, Reed was charged with one count of sexual conduct with a minor and one count of child abuse in connection with the same victim. These offenses are included in the current indictment, prosecutors said.

On Dec. 11, 2012, Phoenix police received an emergency call of a child not breathing at a home on South 45th Street in Phoenix. They arrived to find a child in a crib with labored breathing and then not breathing at all.

The girl was rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The child was found to have multiple traumatic injuries all over her body including deep tissue bruising, pattern bruising, swelling and abrasions, according to police reports.

Police said they learned that Clement and Reed operated an unlicensed babysitting business out of the home and that the victim had been in their sole care and custody for the previous month.

Reed told police he disciplined the child with physical force which he said was "excessive" at times, prosecutors said. Clement indicated she witnessed several of these incidents, according to prosecutors. The couple did not seek medical attention for the child, prosecutors said.

Four other children were in the home at the time of the death, including two belonging to Reed and Clement, police said.
