A burn ban has been issued for parts of Southwest Louisiana, according to a news release from the Louisiana State Fire Marshal's Office.

Fire Marshal Butch Browning said the ban is for a list of parishes, including Acadia, Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Jeff Davis and Vernon parishes.

Other parishes include: Avoyelles, Bienville, Bossier, Caddo, Caldwell, Catahoula, Claiborne, DeSoto, Evangeline, Franklin, Grant, Jackson, Lafayette, LaSalle, Lincoln, Morehouse, Natchitoches, Ouachita, Rapides, Red River, Richland, Sabine, Union, Webster, West Carroll and Winn.

Browning said the ban is due to the "extremely dry conditions" in certain parishes.

A cease and desist for all private burning, pursuant to authority under R.S. 40:1563, went into effect at 3 p.m. Wednesday. Private burning will only be allowed by permission of the local fire department or local government, Browning said.

Browning said the ban will not apply to prescribed burns by the Department of Agriculture and Forestry, "by those trained and certified by the Department of Agriculture and Forestry, or by those who conduct prescribed burning as a ‘generally accepted agriculture practice' as defined by the Louisiana Right to Farm Law (R.S. 3:3601 et seq.)."

Browning said violation of the order could result in criminal and/or civil penalties.
