LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

The Lake Charles Fire Department will conduct fire hydrant flushing in Lake Charles from July 6 through August 6.

The hydrant testing is required by law to be done twice a year, according to Fire Chief Keith Murray.

The flushing stirs up iron particles and other settled material, which could cause rust-colored water. Murray said this is a temporary condition and the water is safe for domestic use.

Residents experiencing discolored water can pick up a detergent that can get the discoloration out of clothing. It's available at the the Lake Charles Fire Department Administration Building, 4200 Kirkman St., or at any local neighborhood fire house.

For information, call 491-1598 or 491-1599.
