COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Former University of South Carolina head football coach and state senator Dr. Warren Giese has died.

His obituary from Dunbar Funeral Home says Giese died Thursday at the age of 89.

Giese was the Gamecocks football coach from 1956-1960, compiling a 28–21–1 record. His 28 wins are the eighth-most all-time at South Carolina.

Giese's best season came in 1958 when he led the Gamecocks to a 7-3 record, including a 5-2 mark in the ACC and finished the season ranked 13th in the country.

He was a Distinguished Professor of Emeritus and served in the South Carolina Senate from 1984-2004.

Giese is survived by his wife Phyllis and four children. His funeral services are private.
