    Several witnesses told us they heard what they thought were gunshots just before 9 o'clock. Shortly after, several Super 8 Hotel guests were told to evacuate. At least one person was taken away by ambulance, according to witnesses. There is no word on their injuries. More >>

A member of the Gulf South Conference, a power conference in the Division II ranks that has boasted the 2012 national champion in Valdosta State last season.
 
- The Gulf South Conference has had a team play for the national championship three times in the last six seasons.
- West Alabama is the defending Gulf South Conference champions and is a preseason favorite to win the league for the second consecutive year.
- The Tigers have seven players that were named to the preseason all-GSC team - WR Chad Toocheck, TE Ty Morgan, T Taylor Burnett, C Skeeter Sellers, DL Willie Packer, DB Malcolm Butler, BT Matt Humphries. BT is Blocking Team.
- DB Malcolm Butler and RS Malik Lofton were named preseason first team all-American by USA College Football; QB Gary Johnston, OL Skeeter Sellers, DL Willie Parker and P Jordan Ikner named to the second team; OL Taylor Burnett to the third team.
- The Tigers are ranked No. 12 in this week's AFCA Division II Coaches Top 25.
Cornerback Malcolm Butler and running back Kedrick Rhodes have been named to the 2014 Senior Bowl Watch List.
- Five current UWA players transferred from Division I FBS programs - LB Desmond Brown from Clemson; LB Qyen Griffin from ULL; DE Martaze Jackson from Tennessee; SS Demetrus McNeal from Auburn; RB Kedrick Rhodes from Florida International.
