(RNN) - AT&T is getting some backlash after an image they tweeted and posted on Facebook to tribute 9/11.

The photo shows someone holding a smartphone displaying the "Tribute in Light" memorial – where the Twin Towers stood before the terrorist attack. It was accompanied by the words, "Never Forget."

Many followers of the mobile carrier were not supportive of the social media post, calling it "tacky" and not a time for product advertisement.

"@ATT Oh god, who thought this would be a good time/idea for marketing what in the…," Mike Zlasher Chan tweeted.

The image was first taken down from Twitter but remained on their Facebook page for a couple hours. 

AT&T tweeted an apology.

"We apologize to anyone who felt our post was in poor taste," AT&T said on Twitter. "The image was solely meant to pay respect to those affected by the 9/11 tragedy."
