4.1 magnitude earthquake rattles East Texas

TIMPSON, TX (KLTV) -

An earthquake shook East Texas on Monday afternoon. 

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 4.1 magnitude rattled the ground. Its epicenter was about two miles west-northwest of Timpson. The earthquake occurred at 4:52 p.m.

Timpson is about 25 miles northeast of Nacogdoches. 

East Texans reported feeling the earthquake in Mt. Enterprise, Garrison, Gladewater and Henderson and Appleby. A viewer in Garrison says the earthquake shook her house for about 15 seconds. 

Timpson police Officer Adam Renfro says he had received reports of dishes and pictures falling from walls but no significant damage.

This is the tenth earthquake to hit Shelby County since May 2012.

Another series of moderate earthquakes hit Sabine County on April 23, 1964. According to the USGS, Hemphill was near the epicenter of the 4.4 magnitude earthquake. Aftershocks were reported in Pineland, Hemphill, and Milam. Cracked wallpaper and plaster were the only damage reported. More tremors, reaching 4.2 in magnitude, were reported in May, June, and August of that year.

In 1957, several shocks were reported at 4.7 in magnitude in the Gladewater area in Northeast Texas.

By first thing Monday morning, there should not be any more rain around us. Rain chances are up to 60% tonight, but will fall after midnight. Temperatures will also be cooler. Some places may see the lower 50s! That would be much closer to where we should be this time of the year.
