JENNINGS, LA (KPLC) -

A Rayne man is in jail for drug charges after a traffic stop on Interstate 10, according to a news release from the Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff's Office.

Deputies working stationary radar on I-10 westbound at milepost 60 observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed and conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle.

Authorities said upon exiting the patrol unit, the suspect's vehicle's reverse lights activated. The vehicle slowly backed up until it struck the patrol unit.

Authorities said the driver was ordered to turn off the vehicle. Upon coming into contact with the driver, deputies could smell a strong odor of burnt marijuana and air freshener emitting from the interior of the vehicle.

The driver was cited for speeding and then asked for consent to search his vehicle. The driver, Forrest Devon Charles III, 30, of Rayne, gave written consent to search his vehicle.

As deputies searched the vehicle, they discovered a cigarette pack containing 8 1/2 pills wrapped in a clear plastic bag, which deputies identified as Hydrocodone (a schedule III drug).

Authorities said deputies also discovered, in the center console of the vehicle, stacks of money wrapped in a rubber band.

Charles was arrested and booked into the parish jail without incident. All contraband and currency ($8,921.00) was seized.
