Atlantans celebrate the Dream in Washington, DC

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke the memorable words, "I have a dream," 50 years ago from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

People showed up there on Tuesday to pay tribute to the Civil Rights icon. People from Atlanta, as well as all over the country, descended on the nation's capital to be part of this next chapter of history.

Stephanie Willis and her daughter Tamera traveled from Atlanta to Washington, DC, to be a part of history.

"It's inspirational in a way to see how far we've come as a country and to be in the city where it all goes down is just great," Tamera Willis said.

Stephanie Willis calls being where King delivered the "I have a dream" speech 50 years later powerful.

"I was born in the 60s and the struggle that a lot of people faced back in the day, it's nice to see some of those people come together and march because my parents were a part of it and that's very touching and powerful to my heart," Stephanie Willis said.

"I can't imagine how they must have felt to look out and see thousands and thousands of people," Denise Giacomini said.

Giacomini and her sister, of San Jose, CA, wanted to celebrate the dream right where it began.

"I still think we have a long way to go as far as jobs and equity and equality in the United States, and so I wanted to come back and be a part of the march," Giacomini said.

Jamie and Thelma English marched with King in Chicago. They said King even attended a meeting at their home.

"What was it like meeting him?" reporter Jennifer Mayerle asked.

"Wonderful, very impressive. He was just a wonderful man who did wonderful things," Jami English said.

The couple couldn't imagine not being at the Lincoln Memorial, looking out at the same scene as King did 50 years ago.

"These are things that happen only once in a lifetime and it's history in the making. Years from now they're going to look back on this and say, 'Wow,'" Thelma English said.
