Quarterbacks sharp in final scrimmage of final camp

LAKE CHARLES – Five McNeese quarterbacks combined to throw for 360 yards and four touchdowns as the Cowboys broke fall camp Wednesday night with the annual playing of the Cowboy Night scrimmage.

Four days prior in the team's first scrimmage of the preseason, the defense held the upper hand by keeping the offense out of the endzone until the final play of the script with the No. 1 unit.  That wasn't the case on Wednesday as starting quarterback Cody Stroud led a fast-paced attack with 116 passing yards on 8 of 11 completions with two touchdowns, including a nice performance in a two-minute drill that saw him march the team 65 yards in 7 plays and 46 seconds ending with an 11-yard strike to true freshman receiver Kent Shelby.

Four of the five scoring drives took less than two minutes with three taking less than a minute as the Cowboys worked on their 4-minute and 2-minute offenses as well as certain aspects of the kicking game.

"I thought things went really good," said head coach Matt Viator.  "We got all of our situations in.  We got the no-huddle to start and I thought Cody did a great job on the first drive and then with the 2-minute drive.  We got all of our situations in and all of our kicking game work in."

Transfer tight end Nic Jacobs showed his athleticism with a 44-yard touchdown catch from Tyler Bolfing where he weaved his way between defenders while making a couple bounce off of his 6-5, 255 pound frame.  Bolfing finished the night a perfect 4 for 4 for 64 yards and a score.

Will Briscoe, who is seeing live action at quarterback for the first time in nearly two years after returning from two knee injuries, connected with Deajon Mitchell on a 47-yard score to cap a 4-play, 70-yard drive that took just 41 seconds.  Two plays earlier, Briscoe, who finished the scrimmage 3 for 5 for 74 yards and a touchdown, hit Javaris Murray for 23 yards to set up the scoring play.

Sophomore running back Kelvin Bennett led all rushers with 66 yards on three carries but it was his 55-yard touchdown streak that wowed the crowd with his blazing speed as he burst through the line for the score.  Bennett set a McNeese single-game school record against Lamar in the season finale last season with a 93-yard touchdown run.

Mitchell joined Shelby, Diontae Spencer, Wes Briscoe, William Ryckman and David Bush with two catches each to lead the team.

Freshmen quarterback Grant Ashcraft and Joe Lissard combined to complete 7 of 14 passes for 106 yards and an interception.

McNeese, who opens the season on Aug. 31 at South Florida, will return to the practice field on Thursday afternoon as it begins preparations for the Bulls.

Tonight, it should be another nice, yet warm evening. Any clouds we see today will clear away around sunset, and the rain chances go back to zero tonight. The temperatures will be fairly warm. They should not cool out of the 70s in most places. Especially near the coastline. North of I-10 has a chance to too the upper 60s, but it will still be warm. This will start off with more hot and humid conditions. There will likely be plenty of clouds every now and then.
