LSU scrimmages for final time; attention turns to TCU

LSU had its final scrimmage of the preseason on Tuesday as the Tigers went through a 150-play workout indoors at the Charles McClendon Practice Facility.

LSU now turns its attention to next week's season-opener against TCU in Arlington, Texas.
The Tigers and Horned Frogs kickoff at 8 p.m. on Saturday, August 31 in the Cowboys Classic at AT&T Stadium. The game will be televised on ESPN.

"We had a good go at it," LSU coach Les Miles said. "We were able to get a lot accomplished as we closed in on about 120 plays on offense and defense with another 30 plays on special teams.

"This film will be the style that an assistant coach will be able to correct from and improve our football team. I like the position that we are in. The scrimmage itself made it obvious that we are a talented team but there are some things we need to correct."

Miles said that while he is not ready to name a starting lineup for the season-opener, the scrimmages have given the staff a pretty good feel for which players are in position to see action for the Tigers against TCU.

"I think we will take it all the way till game week before we decide our two-deep," Miles said. "I'm more set on who is going to play than who will start."

Tuesday's scrimmage was scripted and featured redzone, tight zone, four-minute and two-minute offense. LSU also worked on all phases of special teams.

Miles said the Tiger offense managed to throw the ball for 250 yards along with 200 rushing yards. However, some pre-snap penalties dampened what would have been a very productive outing for the offense.

Miles said running back Alfred Blue scored a pair of touchdowns and led the team in rushing. Other offensive leaders included Jarvis Landry, Odell Beckham Jr., and Dillon Gordon with touchdowns. Miles said both Zach Mettenberger and Anthony Jennings threw TD passes.

"We were sloppy and need to get things right," Miles said of the mistakes. "If we do that than we will have the opportunity to beat a lot of teams. There are some things we have to eliminate like pre-snap penalties and holding calls. It's the pre-snap penalties and those things that frustrate you as a coach. They need to be corrected."

Defensively, Miles continued to praise the play of the defensive line, in particular sophomore Danielle Hunter and junior Jordan Allen.

"The defensive front continues to improve," Miles said. "Danielle Hunter made some plays today that I really liked. Jordan (Allen) is big, strong and athletic. He didn't really have the opportunities last year because of the guys in front of him but now with another year in the program he is a guy who will play really well. Our ends are going to be really dominant."

Miles also said that the Tiger linebackers are "fast, hard-hitting and might be the most athletic group that we've had that position since we've been here."

Junior linebacker D.J. Welter had four tackles and a sack, while Allen had five tackles and sack to pace the defensive effort for the Tigers.

LSU will take a day off from contact tomorrow as the Tigers will have a walk-thru followed by a practice on Thursday afternoon in what will be the start of game week preparations.
