Suspected fake deputy accused of shoplifting - KPLC 7 News, Lake Charles, Louisiana

Man accused of shoplifting in stolen Calcasieu Sheriff's uniform

CALCASIEU PARISH, LA (KPLC) -

Officials say a man dressed as a Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Deputy stole two flat-screen televisions from Wal-Mart in Sulphur around noon Tuesday.

Investigators recognized the suspect from prior brushes with the law with the help of Louisiana State Police, and arrested 26-year-old Gary Robertson, of Westlake, after a traffic stop and short foot chase in Moss Bluff.

Sheriff Tony Mancuso said Robertson stole the uniform from a relative who is a deputy and did not know the uniform was missing.

Mancuso also fears that Robertson had the uniform long enough to commit other crimes posing as a deputy. He is asking anyone with information to contact the Sheriff's Office.

Robertson was booked into the Sulphur City Jail and charged with theft over $500, impersonation of a police officer and theft, with possibly more charges pending.

Judge Robert Wyatt set Robertson's bond at $120,000.
