By McNeese SID Matthew Bonnette:

LAKE CHARLES – McNeese wrapped up its 10th consecutive day of practice on Friday with its third two-a-day session of the week and will strap it up for the preseason's first scrimmage on Saturday evening at 6 in Cowboy Stadium.

Friday afternoon's practice lasted just over an hour with much of the session being consumed with team passing and running drills.

Like most fall scrimmages, Saturday's outing will be scripted.

"We're looking for speed," said head coach Matt Viator.  "Looking at different situations.  We'll be trying to get the players to make plays on either side of the ball.  We're going to cover every possible situation we can.

"Another thing is we're going to try to get enough players in the game as we can and evaluate as many as possible."

After 13 practices in 10 straight days, Viator is pleased with what he has seen so far.

"I think things are coming along really good," said Viator.  "It seems like the last three practices we've gotten our legs back under us.  It kind of comes and goes during August, you get the camp legs and some things seem to be moving slower.  You kind of have to work through it and I think we're doing a good job of doing that."

Following Saturday's scrimmage, the Cowboys will have their first day off of the preseason on Sunday as the team holds its annual media and fan day from 5-6 p.m. in Cowboy Stadium.

The second and final scrimmage of the preseason will come on Wednesday at the annual Cowboy Night event beginning at 6:30.

McNeese opens the season on Aug. 31 at South Florida at 6 p.m. central time in a game that will be broadcast on ESPN3.
