Calcasieu DA sets news conference for today in 2013 murder

Good Thursday morning to you!  Britney Glaser here in the KPLC 7Newsroom with a look at what's ahead on today's Sunrise:

*The Calcasieu Parish District Attorney's Office is scheduled to hold a news conference at 3:00 P.M. regarding the 2013 murder case involving defendants Brian Diamond, Kawliger Connelly and Steven Ellis.  The three men are charged with manslaughter in the beating death of Matthew Crochet at a New Year's Eve party in Moss Bluff.

*Coca-Cola is rolling out a new ad campaign aimed at quieting concerns over artificial sweeteners in its drinks.  Find out what's pushing them to speak out about human consumption of aspartame.

*An animal abuse case out of St. Bernard Parish lands a man in jail after deputies find 29 puppies and three adult dogs dead in his freezer.  We'll tell you why he said they were being held in the freezer.

*A hearing will be held tomorrow to determine whether remains thought to be that of Nela Hardwick will be exhumed.  She disappeared 20 years ago.  Now, investigators believe a body found in 1998 along I-10 in Hancock County, Mississippi could be her.

    The Calcasieu Parish Combined Anti-Drug Task Force (C.A.T. Team) has arrested a Mississippi man who was transporting over a hundred pounds of marijuana, worth about $35,000, on I-10, authorities say.

    A Sulphur man and his brother have been sentenced to federal prison for trafficking alligator snapping turtles. Travis Leger, of Sulphur, was sentenced to one year and nine months in prison. His half-brother, Jason Leckelt, of Oklahoma, was sentenced to one year and four months in prison and Rickey Simon, of Sulphur, was sentenced to three years probation.
