Cowboys Wrap Up First Day in Full Pads

LAKE CHARLES – The first practice in full pads on Sunday for McNeese wasn't much of a difference physically, but the competitiveness took a step up, especially on defense.

"I thought the defense looked good today," said head coach Matt Viator.  "Yesterday (Saturday), I think the offense made too many plays the defense wanted so I think they stepped it up today."

The final 15 minutes of practice consisted of situational down and yardage scrimmage that saw the defense get an interception from Guy Morgan and several quarterback sacks.

"We weren't as sharp offensively as we were the day before so we certainly have to clean that up," said Viator.  "Overall, I think our defense ran good today."

The Cowboys will hold the first of four two-a-day practices on Monday with the morning session beginning at 9:40 in Cowboy Stadium followed by the afternoon practice at 4:30 at the A.I. Ratcliff Practice Fields.

McNeese will conduct its first scrimmage of the preseason next Saturday at 6 p.m. and will hold its annual media day event next Sunday at 5.

McNeese Fall Camp Notebook:  Day 5

• McNeese put on the full pads for the first time on Sunday but the physicality of the extra equipment was not different than no pads.

Said junior defensive end Everett Ellefsen:  "We're going 100 percent with or without pads.  To be honest, having the shoulder pads on is actually a little relief.  At least we have something protecting our shoulders from the helmet hits."

• Dressing in full pads does have its perks as it brings out more emotions from the players.

Said junior offensive lineman Antoine Everett:  "Putting on the full pads definitely gets the juices flowing.  There's a lot of trash talk between the offensive linemen and the defensive line.  But I'm probably the one that does the most trash talking."

•  More fans showed up to practice on Sunday, one which was Billy Ryckman, the father of senior wide receiver William Ryckman.  Billy was a standout wide receiver at Louisiana Tech during his playing days and a 1977 NFL Draft pick by the Atlanta Falcons.

•  McNeese ended Sunday's practice with live field goal sessions where both kickers – sophomore returner Jean Breaux and senior transfer Ryan Rome, knocking down all six of the kicks attempted.  Breaux hit from distances of 30, 38 and 43 yards while Rome connected on field goals of 30, 40 and 48 yards.  His 48-yarder had a good 15-20 more yards of clearance.

Dry weather expected for SundayDry weather expected for Sunday

Tonight, the showers will start to wind down. There should not be much rain left after midnight. Clouds will linger overnight. It will still be a muggy night, with temperatures not cooling down very much. I’m forecasting a low of 59 degrees, but it may not cool down that far overnight. By Sunday, the same front that stalled over us, will begin to weaken. Therefore, I do not think there will be many showers around. I’m keeping a 20% for a little bit of drizzle overnight.
